The object of craps

The object of the game of craps is to bet on the roll of the dice. Craps is played on a table that consists of various betting options. You place your bet on the table and the shooter rolls the dice. You win based on your bet compared to the roll of the dice. This continues for multiple rounds until the shooter ends their turn. Then, another shooter has a turn at rolling the dice. The basics are pretty easy.

Playing the game of craps

The first roll of the dice is called the come out roll. The shooter rolls the dice and either ends their turn or establishes the point. To end their turn the dice must read a 2, 3, 7, 11 or 12. Bets that are won are paid out, losing bets are taken and the shooter changes. If, however, a point is established, the point is marked and rounds continue with the same shooter until a 7 is rolled.

Placing bets at craps

While the premise of craps is pretty easy to grasp, the betting possibilities is where the game gets a bit more complex. For those who are beginning, don’t bother with the more complicated, elaborate bets. Instead, stick with the simpler ones. Not only are the more complex bets somewhat confusing but they also are generally the ones with the worst odds, designed to take your money. All bets must be placed before the dice are rolled. For online craps, this is very user friendly as you will only be able to click on the bets that are available to be placed which limits the confusion.

Common types of craps bets

The types of craps bets that are most common and recommended for all players from novice to expert include:

Pass – Most all players will start out with this type of craps bet as it has good odds and is a simple bet to make. This is a bet made at the come out roll. If the shooter rolls a 7 or 11, you win. If the shooter rolls a 2, 3 or 12 – also known as craps – you lose the bet. If a point is rolled on the come out roll and this is rolled again before hitting a 7 you win, otherwise you lose.

Don’t pass – This is another common bet which, as the name indicates, is nearly the opposite of the pass. This type of craps bet will result in a win if the shooter hits a 2 or 3 on the come out roll. It will lose if a 7 or 11 is rolled and if a 12 is rolled there is a push – no money won nor lost. If a point is established you will win if a 7 is rolled before the point is hit again.

Come/Don’t come – these bets work similarly as the pass and don’t pass types of craps bets. The difference is that these craps bets can be made at any time, not just on the come out roll.

Odds – Odds bet types in craps are based on whether the point or a 7 will be rolled first. If you bet the shooter will hit the point before a 7 you buy the odds. If you bet the shooter will roll a 7 first you lay the odds. Payout is determined based on the point.

Exotic types of craps bets

There are more elaborate craps bets that can be fun to bet on and experiment with but are also harder to get and can get a bit confusing. These include:

  • Big 6 or 8 – a craps bet that a 6 or 8 will hit prior to a 7.
  • Aces, 12, 7, 11, craps – a craps bet that a 2, 12, 7, 11 or craps (2, 3, 12) will hit on the next roll
  • Place win/lose – choose a specific number to hit or not hit before a 7
  • Buy/lay bet – similar to a place win with different payouts
  • Field bet – a type of craps bet that the next roll will be 2, 3, 4, 9, 10, 11 or 12
  • Hard way bet – betting that a double will hit before a 7
  • Horn bet – the next roll will be 2, 3, 11 or a 12

While some craps bets can be complicated, the game is fairly easy to learn and fun to play. Get started today and become an expert in this fast paced, exciting game!
